E L Doctorow was born on January 6, 1931, New York. He is the author of several critically acclaimed novels . The novel Ragtime received the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction and the Arts and Letters Award, it was later transformed into a film in 1981 and a musical in 1998. In 2006, he held the Glucksman Chair in American Letters at New York University.
