Written with Vicount Tonypandy's support and co-operation, this biography is of the major public figure - George Thomas, who rose from the poverty of the South Wales Valleys to become Speaker of the House of Commons. George Thomas's cry "order, order" was a much loved and oft-quoted feature of Parliament, and his role as Speaker of the Commons brought him to the attention of the nation. Yet, his life prior to that role was rich in political activity and his Christian faith backed his strong socialist principles. After retirement, he keenly supported the work of his favourite charity, National Children's Homes, and won the heart of the British people through his courageous battle against throat cancer.
