The task which I propose to myself in this and a few subsequent studies is to make clear to my own mind, and to enter with sympathy and understanding, the world of ideas, of beliefs, of fears, of protests, which lies behind that passionate and militant passage at the close of our eighth chapter of St, Paul's letter to the Romans.

It is one of those great passages - the fortieth chapter of Isaiah is another - which, by virtue of their spaciousness and exaltation, their simplicity and their ultimateness, rise like peaks out of a tumult of mountains - final ventures of the human spirit into the region of absolute truth. They are truly eloquent words, entirely free, indeed, from the affectation and self-consciousness of the lower eloquence.
