After storming Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, the 29th fought through the hedgerows of Normandy and Brittany in the summer of 1944, suffering more than 12,000 casualties. Joseph Balkoski is the command historian for the Maryland National Guard and U.S. Army's 29th Infantry Division. He specializes in World War II history, specifically the D-Day invasion and subsequent Normandy campaign. He has also served as adjunct professor in both the History and Writing Departments at the University of Baltimore. He is the author of six widely acclaimed World War II history books, including Omaha Beach: June 6, 1944; Utah Beach: The Amphibious and Airborne Assault on D-Day; and Beyond the Beachhead: The 29th Infantry Division in Normandy. He resided in Normandy during the summer of 2001 to study the D-Day invasion beaches and Normandy battlefields and has conducted several staff rides there for current U.S. Army soldiers as part of their military training. During the June 2004 60th anniversary remembrance of the D-Day invasion, he acted as guide for D-Day veterans, current U.S. Army soldiers, and Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich. His latest book, From Brittany to the Reich: The 29th Infantry Division in Germany, is the third volume of his ongoing history of the 29th Division in World War II. He has been categorized by USA Today as "The top living D-Day historian;" and by best-selling World War II author Carlo D'Este as "The foremost historian of the D-Day experience." The Maryland National Guard recently awarded him the Meritorious Service Medal.
