He never produced a complete commentary on the Bible, but this anthology of quotations from his articles and sermons reveal a man steeped in Scripture and able to give its interpretation with elegant insight. Meditating on both beloved and difficult passages, his studies of themes and figures such as Joshua, Saul and David show great psychological and theological understanding. The book also records his comments on the nature of the Bible and how it should be read. One reviewer called this book 'a significant contribution to the history and spirituality of Biblical interpretation.'
