J. B. Smith, a Texas Sheriff, community leader, businessman, rancher, and humorist, is a man of varied interests. He is a licensed auctioneer and a connoisseur of Texas chili. J. B. has served as president of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas and is one of the longest tenured sheriffs in the state, having continuously been elected since 1976. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas in Tyler and is a graduate of the National FBI Academy. Devoted to the office he holds and the people of Smith County, J. B. is proud of his highly qualified and experienced team of crime-scene investigators who have been called upon to direct or assist in operations all over the state.In addition to his law enforcement duties, J. B. raises a small herd of cattle and other critters on his ranch north of Tyler. A twelve-year veteran of the National Speakers Association, J. B. is a well-known, witty humorist whose philosophy on life is “Blessed are those who laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.”
