More pronounced to half title page. Front free endpaper is missing. Bookseller sticker stuck to front pastedown. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean. Minor wear marks to boards.

Heavy tanning to board edges and spine, which has mild crushing to ends. Mild water stains and droplets to spine and rear board. Books has a backward lean.

There is also the name of a previous owner (revered Oxford scholar Tony COCKSHUT) written in pencil to the front free end paper plus some browning to the end papers. The dust jacket is fair with some general chipping and creasing to the edges and corners culminating in 3 moderate tears. There is also some staining to the edges.

First edition thus, hardcover, has a mild lean to the binding with a thin crack starting near the center of the text block, light bumps to the spine ends and cover corners, shallow bowing to the covers, and slight creasing to the upper corner of a few pages. Overall, a solid, Near Very Good copy in a Good+ dust jacket, which has chips to the spine ends and corners, dulling with smudging and soiling to the covers and spine, and wear with some short creased tears to the edges. The jacket is wrapped in Mylar.
