Quarto; hardcover, with gilt spine title and upper board decoration; 240pp. with many full-colour and monochrome illustrations. Slightly rolled; previous owner's ink inscription to front free endpaper. Dustwrapper mildly rubbed and now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Very good. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. The authors cast new light on the mysteries of Easter Island, overturning many of Thor Heyerdahl's well known theories. They consider possible methods by which the islanders transported the massive effigies over long distances and erected them on platforms. They also look at the largely undeciphered Rongorongo 'script' engraved on wooden boards, and the bizarre cult of the birdman - featured in the island's abundant rock art - with its complex egg-hunting ritual. In an effort to answer the mystery of the toppling of the figures after the first European arrivals on the island, Paul Bahn and John Flenley speculate that the decline may have stemmed from ecological catastrophe. New archaeological evidence, intriguing folk memories and the records of Captain Cook and other explorers are used to support this view.

They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently they are superior examples.
