A new translation by Lowell Bair. Afterword by Henry Hewes. 220 pages. paperback. CE2445. . keywords: Signet Classic Paperback. FROM THE PUBLISHER - CYRANO DE BERGERAC occupies a unique place in the modern theater. Deliberately disavowing realism and contemporary relevance, Edmond Rostand's masterpiece represents a turning back in both time and spirit to an earlier age of high adventure and soaring idealism. Its magnificent hero, Cyrano, noble of soul and grotesque in appearance, gallant Gaston soldier, brilliant wit and timid lover, alternately comic, heroic, and tragic, represents one of the most challenging of all acting roles in its complexity and mercurial changes of mood. From its original production to the present day, CYRANO DE BERGERAC has enjoyed a charmed existence on the stage, its unflagging pace of action and eloquence of language enchanting critics and public alike. Here, in a superlative new translation, is the ultimate triumph of the great French romantic tradition-a work which, in the words of the French critic Lemaitre, 'prolongs, unites and blends., three centuries of comic fantasy and moral grace.' A new translation by Lowell Bair. With an afterword by Henry Hewes. . inventory #39700.

Condición: New. Condición: Good. New York: The Theatre Magazine, Co., 1911. 1911. Good. - Quarto [approximately 14 inches high by 10 inches wide], softcover bound in color pictorial wrappers with a color photo portrait by Bangs of actress Emmy Wehlen on the front wrap & a pictorial color ad for Pall Mall cigarettes, lithographed by Brett Litho, on the rear wrap. The wraps are chipped with a few small stains & with a crease across the bottom corner of the rear wrap. The back strip is perished with large pieces out & the lower half of the wraps are detached. Title, pages [70]-104 & xxviii pages [ads]. Numerous black-and-white illustrations & pictorial ads, including a number of full-page portraits. There are small areas of very light dampstaining to the top corners of the pages. Good. A periodical named "Our Players' Gallery" first appeared in 1900. The title was changed to "Theatre" in 1901, and to "Theatre Magazine" in 1917, under which title it continued publication until April 1931. A splendid source of information on the still developing art of theatre in New York City, the magazine covered all aspects of the stage: interviews with actors and actresses, commentaries by playwrights and critics, highlights of current plays with summaries and photographs, and onstage fashion. The magazine was respected in its time for its contributions from prominent critics and actors. The periodical is beautifully illustrated with elegant portraits and attractive advertisements, many of them for fashion. [Information from the virtual newsstand project of the University of West Florida].The editor of the magazine, Arthur Hornblow [1865-1942 was an English-born playwright and critic who moved to America in 1889. He was a staff member of the Dramatic Mirror and a play reader for A. M. Palmer before editing Theatre from 1901 to 1926. He was the author of "A History of the Theatre in America, from Its Beginnings to the Present Time" [1919].The cover photo of this issue is of Emmy Wehlen in "Marriage a la Carte". There is another full-page photo of Wehlen in this piece with C. Morton Horne in the body of the magazine. Wehlen [1877-1977] was a German-born musical comedy and silent film actress. She began her career in Stuttgart but soon moved to New York and opened in the musical comedy 'Marriage a la Carte" in January 1911. She disappeared from the public eye in her thirties. The title page photo is a splendid shot of Maude Adams in full cock regalia in Rostand's "Chantecleer". There are further pictures of the production in the magazine. Among the articles are 'The Art of Mary Garden" and "A Chat with Julia Marlowe and Susan B. Anthony".
