10"x7" (25.5x17.5cm). First edition. A tribute to the three British servicemen - Colin Grazier and Tony Fasson who lost their lives at the scene, and Tommy Brown who died shortly after the end of the war - who retrieved the codebooks from sinking German submarine U-559, which enabled Bletchley Park's codebreakers to break the Enigma code and so win the Battle of the Atlantic. pp223(1) with monochrome photo & other illustrations, bibliography, and index. Hardback / hard cover: black boards, backstrip titled etc in gilt. Foot of backstrip a little compressed, otherwise a VERY GOOD+ copy in GOOD unclipped dust jacket lightly creased along upper edges, with open nick and associated slight loss and creasing at lower edge of rear panel, and with a number of very minor indentations/scratchmarks. Inscribed "To Betty best wishes, Phil Shanahan Bletchley Park 7th September, 2008.".

Card covers, 224pp, b&w photos. Sticker scar bottom left of front cover, one page (97/98) has been miscut and extends past the normal page size - the corner has been folded so that it doesn't protrude. A Very good copy. For almost sixty years after their deaths, three men, whose brave actions werw considered to have shortened the Second World War by as much as two years, remained virtually unknown and uncelebrated. Two lost their lives retrieving vital German codebooks from a sinking U-boat. The third survived the war, only to die in a house fire soon afterwards. It was these precious documents they seized in October 1942 that greatly assisted Bletchley Park's code-breakers to crack Enigma and so win the Battle of the Atlantic. Now recognised as a pivotal moment in world history, three British servicemen made it possible to finally beat the U-boats, but at the time not even their families could be told of the importance of their deeds. This book sets the record straight. It is written in celebration of Colin Grazier GC, Tony Fasson GC, and Tommy Brown GM.
