Paperback. Condición: Very Good. "This devastating reckoning of the true costs of the war holds them to account. Here renowned economists Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes expose the gigantic expenses that never made it into official calculations: From bloated private contracts to staggering interest payments, from the soaring price of oil to the long-term care of veterans and damage to the world economy as a whole. This clear-eyed, angry and chilling account shows how we will all pay the price for a disastrous conflict for many years. Offering tough reforms for the future, it will change the way you think about the cost of war." Near new condition, index, 312p. . 500gms weight; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 312 pages.

Australian ed. Paperback trade (with flaps), very good condition, colour photos centre spread, few figures, pages toned as usual, minor edgewear. 177 pp. The key insight of Lovelock's Gaia Theory is that the entire Earth functions as a single living super-organism. That organism is now sick. It is running a fever because of increased atmospheric greenhouse gases. Earth will adjust to these stresses, but the human race faces a severe test. It is already too late to prevent the global climate from flipping into a new equilibrium that will threaten civilization. But we can do much to save humanity. In the tradition of "Silent Spring," this is a call to address a major threat to our collective future.

Australian ed. Paperback large trade, very good condition, colour photos centre spread, minor edgewear. 178 pp. The key insight of the Gaia Theory of James Lovelock is that the entire Earth functions as a single living super-organism. That organism is now sick. Here, he distils over 40 years of wisdom and observation of the Earth to reveal the faster than expected rate at which our climate is altering, how conventional green measures are not working, and how life as we know it is going to change forever. Only his Gaia model, he shows, can help us fully understand this, and prepare us for the future. (The scarce Australian edition.).

Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. The sheer linguistic challenge of a study like this is evident from the beginning of the book: a prefatory note offers helpful tips on the pronunciation of Turkish, Albanian, Serbo-Croat and Romanian. Malcolm's account represents a staggering archival achievement. He draws on material in upwards of 10 languages in archives from Rome and Warsaw to Dubrovnik and Malta. The result is a work of astonishing (if, at times, almost overwhelming) richness and detail: a deftly woven tapestry of Mediterranean history that incorporates "the all-too-neglected Albanian thread that is woven into the history of 16th-century Europe". In its attention to the stories of the Brunis and the Brutis - frontier families practically unknown outside of specialist histories - across multiple generations, this study is a wonderful contribution to the human history of the Mediterranean. It is impossible to read Malcolm's account without a sense of its resonances for today. Every morning, we wake up to stories of new horrors and new heroics from the Mediterranean. It remains a zone of contact and conflict, a region that both defies and defines our ideas of Europe, Asia, Africa and the world in between. Through work such as Malcolm's, we can come closer to understanding why it continues to resist our indifference: the Mediterranean remains, as it was for the Romans, "our sea".
