Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This efficient, user-friendly instrument will help clinicians make standardized, reliable, and accurate diagnoses and avoid the common problem of premature closure -- the premature focus on one diagnostic possibility. It will also help clinicians of all levels of experience improve their clinical assessment and interviewing techniques and provides extensive documentation of the diagnostic process, an essential procedure in today's managed care world. Specifically adapted from the research standard for Axis I structured clinical interviewing for use in clinical settings, the SCID-I covers those DSM-IV diagnoses most commonly seen by clinicians and includes the diagnostic criteria for these disorders with corresponding interview questions. The SCID-I is divided into six self-contained modules that can be administered in sequence: mood episodes; psychotic symptoms; psychotic disorders; mood disorders; substance use disorders; and anxiety, adjustment, and other disorders. The User's Guide provides instructions on how to use the SCID-I effectively. It contains sections describing the rationale and structure of the SCID-I and detailed discussions on how to assess the specific DSM-IV criteria. A number of sample cases are also included to help clinicians learn how to use SCID-I. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Accounts of hoarding behaviors have appeared in literature, as far back as 319 B.C.E. in the writings of Aristotle's student Theophrastus; in the news, like New York's infamous Collyer brothers in the 1940s; and more recently in popular reality television series. But it wasn't until the publication of DSM-5 in 2013 that hoarding was classified as a disorder in its own right rather than as a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. In this single source, readers can access the most up-to-date comprehensive information on what is known about the disorder.Drawing on the authors' own clinical experiences as well as the latest published research, Hoarding Disorder: A Comprehensive Clinical Guide examines key features of the disorder and treatment approaches, such as: Phenomenology, including diagnosis, comorbidities, and assessment Etiology, from both a cognitive-behavioral and a neurobiological perspective Psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatments, from cognitive-behavioral therapy, harm reduction strategies, and community approaches to the efficacy of specific drugs Challenges, including working with elderly patients, managing cases of animal hoarding, and distinguishing and addressing squalor Key points for each chapter and numerous case studies will help readers easily reference and retain information, and the appendices feature useful symptom rating scales that can be applied to practice. For psychiatrists, psychologists, human service and other mental health professionals, peer support counselors, community advocates, and professionals in training, this invaluable book will improve the reader's knowledge and skill in treating patients with hoarding disorder, both those with straightforward presentations and those with complicated ones. This book examines the phenomenology and etiology of the disorder, as well as psychotherapeutic and pharmacological treatments, challenges, and future directions. Appendices feature useful symptom rating scales that can be applied to practice. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The Pocket Guide to LGBTQ Mental Health is a down-to-earth, informative, and affirming manual for mental health clinicians working with patients of diverse gender and sexual identities. In recent years, people have begun to grapple with these issues in a healthier, more public way, and mental health practitioners must be prepared to meet their patients with the knowledge, understanding, and grasp of the context in which patients live their lives. The editors have brought their specialized knowledge to the project and, along with contributors who are experts in the field of LGBTQ mental health, have created a book of uncommon empathy. The volume's structure is simple, consistent, and effective, with 10 chapters covering lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, pansexual, and allied individuals. Some chapters overlap because some people identify with more than one of these identities. The writers have drawn on both the scientific literature and their own clinical experience to create a volume that is informative, practical, and easy to read. The book possesses an abundance of useful features: All diagnostic and treatment discussions are based on the latest information found in DSM-5. Each chapter includes straightforward, real-world, and evidence-based answers to "Questions Well-Meaning People Ask"essentially, "What would patients, their friends, their parents, their physicians like to know about being X, Y, or Z?" A special section in each chapter addresses themes that may emerge during therapy, preparing the clinician to identify and respond sensitively and knowledgeably to issues that may become salient as counseling progresses. Each chapter concludes with "Five Take-Home Points," a handy summary of the most important information, allowing the reader to identify essential material and consolidate learning. An extensive collection of resources is included, helping the reader to locate more information on reliable websites and from other authoritative sources. Written in a conversational style that will appeal to patients and families, as well as clinicians, the Pocket Guide to LGBTQ Mental Health explores the psychological and cultural context for each gender or sexual identity in a comprehensive, realistic, and affirming way. The book aims to help clinicians master the fundamentals of sexual orientation and gender identity. Each chapter begins with the psychological and cultural context of a particular facet of human sexuality, then proceeds to describe issues and challenges currently faced by people who embrace these identities. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Some psychoanalytic models focus on "how" and "when" particular events may have shaped an individual's emotional and behavioral trajectories in life. In a field as accelerated as psychiatry, it's tempting to use this information to rush to a diagnosis. The object relations model, as clearly outlined in this compelling volume from Dr. Christopher Miller, offers an attractive alternative: it emphasizes how a patient's early development has informed interpersonal relationship templates and how these play out in the here-and-now of the clinical encounter. As accessible to the trainee as it is relevant to the experienced clinician, this guide describes how leaning into the therapist-patient dyad (including transference-countertransference dynamics) provides a fertile ground for learning about the patient's past more vividly.Among the book's standout features are: Clinical vignettes that richly illustrate object relations theory as applied within therapy sessions as well as in acute care settings Experience-near guidance on assimilating the concepts in academic settings, best practices for utilizing supervision, and extensive literature recommendations Discussions of other theoretical approaches (e.g., attachment theory), as well as a dedicated chapter on a neuroscientific model of object relations, demonstrating how this psychodynamic framework can be harmonized within psychiatric theory and practice A chapter focused on termination, including advice for inviting the patient into the decision-making process With its mix of theory, practical advice, and illustrative clinical material, The Object Relations Lens is an indispensable resource for any clinician hoping to gain further knowledge of object relations thought and how this perspective can be eminently useful when conceptualizing and working with patients. With a mix of theory, practical advice, and clinical material, this resource for any clinician interested in applying the object relations model to their clinical or academic work. The book outlines object relations theory, leveraging clinical vignettes to underline the framework's applicability both in therapy and acute care settings. Epigeneticsthe study of cellular events that affect gene expression without changing the DNA sequenceis having an increasing impact on the field of biology, where it has improved our understanding of the development of pathology and led to novel treatments. The same is true in psychiatry, where epigenetics has provided new perspectives on neurodevelopment across the life span. But although the topic is increasingly present in clinical research (as well as in education, licensing, and board exams), its more complex aspects often exceed the scope of preclinical training. The essential guide to this growing field of study, Applied Epigenetics for Mental Health Professionals is designed for practicing psychiatrists, psychiatry residents and fellows, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, trainees, and students. Numerous tables and figures, key points that summarize the most pertinent information, and study questions at the end of each chapter are the book's standout features, reinforcing the specific and broadly applicable information throughout.Opening with an accessible primer to the major concepts that arise in current applications of epigenetics in psychiatry, the book goes on to examine how epigenetics has improved the understanding of Mood disorders, with a focus on depression Neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders Trauma, toxic stress, and resilience Health-promoting behaviors and aging Whatever gaps clinicians may have in their knowledge of the core science of epigenetics, Applied Epigenetics for Mental Health Professionals will give them the confidence to incorporate the latest research in the pathology and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Beginning with the major concepts that arise in current applications of epigenetics in psychiatry, the book goes on to examine how epigenetics has improved the understanding of mood disorders; neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders; trauma, toxic stress, and resilience; and health-promoting behaviors and aging. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Over the last two decades, spurred particularly by the decoding of the genome, neuroscience has advanced to become the primary basis of clinical psychiatry, even as environmental risk factors for mental disorders have been deemphasized. In this thoroughly revised, second edition of Nature and Nurture in Mental Disorders, the author argues that an overreliance on biology at the expense of environment has been detrimental to the fieldthat, in fact, the "nature versus nurture" dichotomy is unnecessary. Instead, he posits a biopsychosocial model that acknowledges the role an individual's predisposing genetic factors, interacting with environmental stressors, play in the etiology of many mental disorders. The first several chapters of the book provide an overview of the theories that affect the study of genes, the environment, and their interaction, examining what the empirical evidence has revealed about each of these issues.Subsequent chapters apply the integrated model to a variety of disorders, reviewing the evidence on how genes and environment interact to shape disorders including: Depressive disorders PTSD Neurodevelopmental disorders Eating disorders Personality disorders By rejecting both biological and psychosocial reductionism in favor of an interactive model, Nature and Nurture in Mental Disorders offers practicing clinicians a path toward a more flexible, effective treatment model. And where controversy or debate still exist, an extensive reference list provided at the end of the book, updated for this edition to reflect the most current literature, encourages further study and exploration. The book discusses the theories that affect the study of genes, the environment, and their interaction and examines what the empirical evidence reveals about each of these issues. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Transference-Focused Psychotherapy for Adolescents With Severe Personality Disorders offers clinicians a comprehensive, compassionate presentation of this specialized psychodynamic psychotherapy. Like the transference-focused psychotherapy model developed for borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adults, the version for adolescents is based on contemporary psychoanalytic object relations theory as developed by the leading thinker in the field, Otto Kernberg, one of the authors of this insightful manual. The book fills an acute need: Currently, there is relatively little research on promising treatments for adolescents with PDs, in part because clinicians hesitate to diagnose PD in patients so young (because of stigma and other factors), although it is evident that a constellation of symptoms can be observed in children and adolescents. However, these personality issues are unlikely to resolve without interventions developed explicitly to treat adolescents. In TFP-A, the psychotherapist provides patients with a safe space to examine emotions, relationships, and past trauma, with the focus on helping them gain better behavioral control; increase affect regulation; develop more intimate and gratifying relationships with family, peers, or close friends; and engage in a productive life aimed at realizing current and future goals.Noteworthy themes and features of the text include: Emphasis on the therapist as "third voice," acting as interpreter and mediator between the adolescent, the parental couple, and conventional society and its values, with the ultimate goal of fostering ego integration sufficient to allow the adolescent to proceed under his own agency. Detailed coverage of the techniques of TFP-A, including creating a holding environment, assuming an active stance, engaging in the interpretive process, analyzing transference and countertransference, achieving technical neutrality, and ensuring interventions are developmentally informed. Practical and accessible review of TFP-A "tactics," including establishing the treatment frame, collaborating with parents, and other interventions that maintain the conditions necessary for working effectively with the adolescent and for protecting treatment integrity. Thoughtful review of the attributes that make a clinician a good "fit" for transference-focused psychotherapy. For example, therapists must have their own lives "together," because they will have to use countertransference reactions to identity and understand what is projected onto them. A rich and useful repository of assessment scales and forms in the Appendices, as well as extended and illustrative patient interviews. Navigating adolescence is fraught under the best of circumstances, but patients with PDs are hampered in their quest for individuation. Transference-Focused Psychotherapy for Adolescents With Severe Personality Disorders fills a critical gap in the treatment literature and is an eminently useful guide for clinicians serving this vulnerable population. This is a manual for clinicians who wish to learn an effective psychodynamic treatment for young people with personality disorders. The book that details treatment models with theoretical foundations and examines systematic interventions designed to explore and resolve the conflicts and behaviors that impede normal adolescent development. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In DSM-5, published in 2013, the classification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was created, subsuming several diagnoses and representing a significant evolution from its first appearance in the DSM-III three decades earlier. Autism Spectrum Disorders reflects this evolution, offering clinicians and families a succinct, definitive, and up-to-date guide to current research in the field and its impact on assessment and treatment. The book begins with the epidemiology of ASDs, which have increased in prevalence, and explores genetic heritability and environmental risk factors. It then explains the roles of the psychiatrist, neurologist and pediatrician in assessing the patient, examines assessment tools and processes, and describes the latest advances in a variety of treatments and interventions. The text's focus is on educating and empowering families and health care providers to determine whether appropriate genetic testing and counseling have been undertaken, whether the individual has had the relevant assessment, and whether skilled behavioral treatment and additional medical assessment or treatment are required.Specifically, the text: Reviews existing prevalence estimates for ASDs since 2000 and discusses methodological factors impacting the estimation of prevalence and the interpretation of changes in prevalence estimates over time. Evaluates genomic and epigenomic research over the last decade in the context of translating findings to practice, in terms of testing (e.g., copy number variants and whole-exome sequencing) and counseling. Examines the role of environmental toxicity in immune dysregulation, which has now been noted among individuals with ASD and their family members by numerous studies. Reviews medical and cognitive assessments that may be needed. Reviews targeted treatments that have the potential to reverse neurobiological abnormalities in ASD Reviews behavioral treatments that are effective in promoting development and improving behavior. Describes the Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR) model, a comprehensive developmental theory with relevance across the lifespan, which targets the core deficits of ASD identified in DSM-5. Provides an overview of school-based interventions for students with autism, exploring the rationale for conducting school-based research and examining existing teacher-, paraprofessional-, and peer-mediated interventions school-based interventions. Explores other approaches to ASDs, such as complementary and integrative approaches and non-invasive brain stimulation technologies, including transcranial magnetic stimulation. The push for early screening is resulting in earlier diagnosis of ASDs and the provision of evidence-based interventions that have a positive impact on outcomes. Autism Spectrum Disorders provides a bench-to-bedside guide that is essential reading for health care providers and families facing the challenges inherent in these complex disorders. The book's emphasis on types of assessment, genetic testing and counseling, and medical and psychological treatment will be exceedingly useful to health care providers navigating the new diagnostic criteria introduced in DSM-5. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Distilling years of experience in educating psychiatric patients and their families about depression, Jon Allen has written a practical book that addresses the challenges depressed patients face on the road to recovery. Allen advocates approaching depression by focusing on the importance of hope, and he helps patients understand depression through two simple ideas: catch-22 and stress pileup. This book conveys how the symptoms of depression impede all the things depressed persons must do to recover, thus defusing self-criticism while encouraging patients to take satisfaction in small steps toward improvement. And the concept of stress pileup encompasses a developmental perspective respecting the full range of accumulated biological, psychological, and interpersonal stresses that play into depression. This broad understanding helps patients become more compassionate toward themselves and puts them in a stronger position to make use of professional care.Coping With Depression is written for a general audience, including depressed persons and their family members, as well as professionals seeking a readable integration of current knowledge that they can use to educate their patients. Although written in nontechnical language, the book provides a sophisticated and comprehensive understanding of the psychological development of depression, the neurobiology of the illness, and the full range of evidence-based treatment modalities. All material is buttressed by extensive references to theoretical, clinical, and research literature.Coping With Depression emphasizes the concept of agency, encouraging readers to take an active role in their recovery. Countering today's trend toward exclusive reliance on antidepressant medication, the book employs the perspective of developmental psychopathology to integrate psychosocial and neurobiological knowledge. The book explains how biological vulnerability is intertwined with stress stemming from insecure attachment, childhood adversity, stressful life events, emotional conflicts, and problems in close relationships. Going far beyond the "chemical imbalance," the author illustrates how the experience of depression is linked to changes in patterns of brain activity as evidenced by neuroimaging studies. Coping With Depression will help readers understand the development of depression from a biopsychosocial perspective appreciate how depression is compounded by related conditions, including bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, personality disorders, general medical conditions, and suicidal states understand how recovering from depression entails working on many fronts, including improving physical health, participating in pleasurable activities, countering negative thinking, resolving internal conflicts, and-above all-establishing more stable and secure attachment relationships become knowledgeable about the treatment options that facilitate coping, including cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and psychodynamic psychotherapy as well as medication and combined treatment appreciate the centrality of hope in recovery from depression and the challenges to hope that depression poses To maintain hope, patients, their family members, and clinicians must face the seriousness of the illness of depression and the daunting obstacles to recovery, including catch-22 in all of its manifestations. Throughout the book, Allen reiterates the theme of agency: depressed persons can use their intelligence to understand their illness and do something to recover and remain well, making use of help from others along the way. The book is written for anyone seeking an in-depth understanding of depression, including patients, family members, and professionals. The book explains the neurobiol Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
