Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. Near fine condition black cloth boards with silver spine lettering contained in a good condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preface; List of Illustrations; Epilogue; Bibliography; and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates and a black-and-white frontispiece plate photo of Camille by Monet, 1866. The upper left jacket edge has a 1 inch chip and rubbing along the lower right front jacket edge (see photographs). All pages are in fine unmarked condition and the binding/spine is very tight and exceedingly square (see photographs). "The ru Le Peletier is unlucky," wrote Wolff (the most influential critic of the day). "Following on the fire at the Opera a new disaster has fallen on the district. An exhibition of so-called painting has just opened at Durand-Ruel's." This is typical of the critical reception accorded to the Impressionists in those early days. In 1879, still under forty, Monet was to realize the full bitterness of the sacrifice which he had made -- Camille died; faithful, devoted, uncomplaining Camille. Camille, who had followed him patiently through starvation, ridicule, and abuse, was eventually, and almost inevitably, claimed by the years of privation. Ironically the turning point was only a few years away. The second half of his life, respectable, prosperous, and full of peace and quiet, is in dramatic contrast to the stormy days which he shared with Camille. From the cocksure by in Le Havre whose slick caricatures brought him considerable local renown to the revered father-figure of French painting at Giverny Monet had travelled a long and painful road. He was cut off by his parents withou a sou. They had, anyway, a bourgeois prejudice against artists, but they could have forgiven him if his art had been academic and profitable. As it was, he was laughed to scorn by the respectable art world, he was constatly penniless, and, as if to confirm their worst suspicions there was Camille. His father's reply to a request for help was "No, not while that woman is with you." They were so poor that sometimes they had to burn the furniture to keep warm in winter, and often they went hungry to buy the precious paints and materials which were his lifeblood. On one occasion they were only kept alive by crusts of bread which Renoir filched from his mother's kitchen and brought to them. But the poverty and the hardships and the struggle are only the raw materials of this story and they serve to point more brilliantly to the warmth and vitality that grew out of them. The world of the Impressionists is a strange world full of contrasts. Men and women from all kinds of backgrounds and of widely different temperaments and characters were drawn together by one thing -- their faith in their way of painting: from the aristocratic Degas with the acid tongue to the wandering, suspicious, lonely Cezanne; from the boisterous, expansive Courbet to Boudin, shy and humble, whose exquisite miniature seascapes were Monet's first accquaintance with painting; from Monet himself, solid, iron-willed, unshakeable, to the nervy, mercurial Renoir who was up in the heights one moment and down in the depths the next. A strange world and a hard one, but, for all that, one full of generosity and gaiety and a great zest for life. And Monet was one of the great rocks which propped up this world. He had the spirit of a giant which nothing could break, and his companions found in his immense cheerfulness and courage a tremendous source of strength and inspiration. He, in his turn, drew much of that strength from Camille." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

Bill Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994, just four monthas after the Letterman incident. His popularity has mushroomed since his death, with the video and CD legacy of his anarchic talent consistently occupying the comedy bestseller lists. The author has spoken to many of Hick's peers as well as his manager, close friends and family to produce a sensitive and revealing biography, as candid as Hicks himself. 252 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. Revised and Updated. Paperback. In this revised and updated edition of his bestselling autobiography, John Gielgud tells the story of his life in the theatre, of the plays he has starred in and directed, of the films he has appeared in (sometimes reluctnatly, as in the case of Caligula), of the actors and actresses he has known - from James Mason, marlon Brando and Richard Burton, to Elizabeth Taylor, Mrs. Patrick Campbell and Liza Minelli - and of the theatres in which he has played - from new York to Rangood. He also tells of the theatre he knew as a young man, the theatre that was run by the great actor/managers, men like Tree and du Maurier, and of the star actresses - Eleonora Duse, Sarah Bernhardt and, of course, his own great-aunt, Ellen Terry - whose names alone could fill a theatre. Published to coincide with Sir John's eighty-fifth birthday, this book records the life of this most highly acclaimed actor, right up to the present day and his appearance in the television series War and Remembrance. Accompanied by photographs, many of which from Sir John's own collection, the book not only provides a fascinating account of a legendary career but also a well documented record of the past seventy years in British theatre. Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Impression. Paperback. The Arcadian Cipher. Crease to corner back cover. This is the story of a quest, a search for a place that is not meant to exist. The elect who have been allowed to share its secret across the centuries have employed codes, secret signs, mysterious writings and works of art to ensure its location and significance remains concealed from the uninitiated. Fascinated by ancient history, esoteric writings and the paintings of the greatest Renaissance masters, art historian Peter Blake has watched as others have made guesses as to the codes and meanings that are mebedded in them. But from recurrent themes, symbolism and patterns Peter has discerned, he reaches quite different conclusions from those grasped at by other researchers. Not least, he has uncovered an Arcadian hillside tomb, untouched for hundreds of years. If the clues that have led him along his trail are right, this could be the final resting-place of two of the most significant charcters in the Bible. But the Arcadian tomb we are led towards is only a starting point. For in following its trail, Peter Blake and the writer Paul S. Blezard unravel a rich cloght of learning and religion sopun in secrecy over the centuries. It also binds together a host of remarkable historical characters party to the riddle of the Cipher. For the first time, their secret is to be revealed.Illustrated. 286 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

In the summer of 1982, Sandy Gall set off for Afghamistan on what turned out to be the hardest assignment of his life. During his career as a reporter he had covered plenty of wars and revolutions before, but he had never been required to walk all the way to an assignment and all the way back, dodging Russian bombs en route. But this was precisely what happened as he and a television crew walked from Pakistan to the Panjsher Valley - a journey that took two weeks. Their goal was the stronghold of the Resistance leader Masud who, although only twenty-eight years old, was the best known and most effective of the Afghan guerrilas. In this enthralling book, Sandy Gall recounts his adventures behind Russian lines, and tells how he emerged at the end of October, exhausted and stones lighter, but triumphant and full of admiration for the courage of the mujahideen. This is to be his tribute to those splendid fighters, pitting themselves relentlessly against Soviet might. General James Doolittle, leader of the 'Doolittle Raid' on Tokyo, commander of 'The Mighty Eighth' and much else besides, was one of the greatest fighting airmen of World War II. He made the first transcontinental flight that took less than twenty-four hours; he was the first American to fly the Andes; he received one of the first PhD's in aeronautical engineering. He worked on techniques and instruments for blind flights, and for longer and faster ones. He won countless awards for his breathtaking stunt flying. By the end of World War II, Doolittle was a three-star lieutenant-general, respected by Eisenhower and Churchill not only for the Tokyo raid, but also for his ideas on military air strategy. Above all, it was his vitality that attracted the attention of businessmen, military personnel and flying buffs, a spirit that still is sustained as he approaches eighty. Very slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. Reg Kray was Britain's most famous prisoner, a villain to some and an anti-hero to many. But who was the real Reg Kray? Who was the man behind the layers of attitude and opinion, exaggeration and distortion? Why was he destined to spend so much of his life behind bars? In this book his widow Roberta writes frankly about the man she knew so well. Drawing on previously unseen documents, including letters and prison medical and officers' reports, as well as her own conversations with him over the years, she describes the problems he faced and overcame as well as the reactions of the authorities to one of the longest-serving prisoners in the country. Roberta sheds new light on Reg's personality, his conflict with Ron, his first marraige to Frances, and his friendships with other inmates. She also details the devolpment of her own marriage from her first meeting with Reg in 1996 to his death in October 2000, revealing the inside story for the first time. In the end she uncovers the real Reg - not an angel, but not a devil either. She describes a man with human failings and human virtues who fought to overcome the harsh physical realities and psychological strains of prison, who won in the end by finding a purpose to his life, by choosing hope over despair. This book is a ground-breaking history of Britain's most famous medal, the Victoria Cross, and a tribute to the extraordinary men who have won it. The Victoria Cross can only be awarded for 'most conspicious bravery, or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy'. It has been awarded only 1,354 times since the Crimean War, the majority of medals going to British and Commonwealth troops. This book vividly brings the story of the medal to life. After telling of Queen Victoria's concern for her troops, and how she devised the Victoria Cross, there is a narrative history of every conflict in which the VC has been awarded - from the Crimean War to the Flaklands. it also gives a complete listing of every VC holder with details of the action in which he won the medal. Written by acclaimed military historian Max Arthur, this is a fascinating and comprehensive study that will appeal to everyone interested in the nature of courage.
