Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 288 pp. First edition. Scholarly work on the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, with the text in English. Black and white and color photographs throughout. Oversize and heavy book will require an additional shipping charge. An account of the Mato Grosso based on the Royal Society and Royal Geographical Society expedition to central Brazil 1967-9. Douglas Botting and David Hemming receive photo credit. Quoting the Introduction, The Central Brazil Foundation realized it was carving a way through the past. It realized how much might be lost in the turmoil of bulldozers and the subsequent upheaval. Consequently, it issued invitations to scientists to come and see, to take note, to record, and to preserve at least some facts from the past. In Britain the R.S. and R.G.S. received and accepted the invitation. They offered to mount a large expedition to be encamped on and around the new road in its virgin setting. They would arrange scientists and money and equipment. They would organize a flow of personnel to map, collect, photograph, observe and record all they could before the people came. Size: 26 x 21 x 3 cm. 0.0.
