Hardcover. Second British Edition. Three volume set. 22 x 14 cm. Octavos. xxviii, 411pp, xii 434pp, xii 394pp. Rebound into brown cloth with black leather spine labels. New endpapers. This copy is lacking the large folding map in volume 1 but does include the 2 small maps in volume 1 and 3 maps in volume 2. Volume 1 is damp stained throughout with wavy pages; text still legible. Small stain to foredge of volume 2. Minor scattered foxing. Stain to the top of the pages in volume 2 running from the title page to page 18, not reaching the text itself. Half-title in volume 2 and not in volumes 1 or 3; I believe as issued. Rare work. The second British and third overall edition, called "A New Edition" of this definitive account of North American exploration. Sabin notes that this edition was edited by Thomas Rees and that it is a reproduction in larger type and better paper then the Philadelphia edition of 1814, but omitting the "Observations on the Government of the Indians" and the 8 meteorological tables. Howes L317. Graff 2481. Wagner & Camp 13:3. Sabin 40830.

300pp. plus five engraved plates (including frontispiece). Without the original folding map (which is seldom present), but with a facsimile laid in. Modern calf, ruled in gilt, morocco label. Early ownership inscription on titlepage. Moderate tanning, scattered foxing. Leaf G6 with an internal tear (but with no loss of paper or text), leaf L torn in lower outer corner (with no loss of text). About very good overall. First edition of the so-called "Apocrypha edition" of Lewis and Clark. This copy contains plates with two variant captions. The plate usually entitled "Mahas Queen" (showing a tribe member with apparently female characteristics) is here entitled "Mahas King," and the plate usually entitled "Ottoes Chief" is here entitled "Ottoes Queen." This is the first copy we have seen with these differently-titled plates. The LITERATURE OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION suggests that they are proof plates, and locates them only in facsimile in a copy at the Bancroft Library. In response to the growing curiosity of the public regarding the findings of Lewis and Clark and the delay in publication of the "authorized account" of their expedition, this compilation of bits and pieces from already published works appeared (culled from Gass, Clark, Mackenzie, Carver, and Jefferson's MESSAGE. of 1806), misleading the reader into believing it was the account sanctioned by the government and containing all the information gathered during the journey. Despite its hodgepodge nature, it provided most of the world with its first detailed account of the Lewis and Clark expedition. It further contains five plates, purporting to be of western Indians. One of these is knocked off from the frontispiece of Bartram's TRAVELS.; the others have no earlier appearance that we can trace. The present copy lacks the incredibly rare folding map, which Wheat notes as "the earliest published map with legends stemming from Lewis and Clark." Howes calls this the "counterfeit" edition, and Sabin states that, according to Paltsits, it is "the earliest edition of an unauthorized 'counterfeit' account." Robert Becker (in Wagner-Camp) incorrectly cites the London map as accompanying this edition. This first Philadelphia edition is quite rare, and is almost invariably found in terrible condition, almost always without the map. LITERATURE OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION 4a.1. WAGNER-CAMP 8:1. PILLING, PROOF-SHEETS 2282. SABIN 96499. STREETER SALE 3122. HOWES L321, "aa." SHAW & SHOEMAKER 17911. REESE, BEST OF THE WEST 37 (note).

Full Leather. Condición: Very Good. 8vo (6 3/4 x 4 inches): folding engraved map of "the Country Inhabited by the Western Tribes of Indians" (early repairs to verso, browned and spotted), engraved frontispiece portrait of a Sioux Queen, and four engraved plates of tribal chiefs (spotted and browned throughout). Bound in contemporary American mottled sheep, the smooth spine gilt-ruled in six compartments, with red morocco lettering-piece in the second (hinges weak, extremities a bit rubbed, head of spine worn with minor loss). Provenance: With the contemporary ownership inscription of William Cook dated 1809 on the verso of the second blank. First edition of an early piece of Lewis and Clark "Apocrypha". Little more than a compilation and rehashing of Jefferson's "Message from the President" of 1806, letters written by William Clark, Patrick Gass's "Journal." published in 1807, and plagiarized portions of Jonathan Carver's "Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America." of 1778 and Alexander Mackenzie's "Voyages from Montreal", 1801. The only original contribution in this work if the engraved folding map: "the earliest published map with legends stemming from Lewis and Clark. Here were the earliest published cartographic reflections of Lewis and Clark's great effort, and this fact alone distinguishes this small map, which otherwise harks back to earlier days" (Wheat). Among the new features on the map is the presence of "F. Clatsop" at the mouth of the Columbia River. REFERENCES: Howes L-321; Streeter sale V:3122; Wagner-Camp 8:1; Wheat Transmississippi 294. Book.
