[6], 256, [4] pp.One of the many early 18th-century Naples editions of the 94 Aesop fables in Latin verses with notes underneath, and the 5 additional fables found by the German philologist and classical scholar Marquart Gudius, together with the extended and scholarly notes and annotations, printed underneath each fable. Together with the 42 fables of Avianus in Latin verses without notes or annotations, the Greek texts of some fables of Aesop, and the Batrachomyomachia by Pseudo-Homer in alternating Greek and Latin lines. The first edition of the Van Hoogstraten edition appeared in Amsterdam in 1701. Our edition is a page-for-page edition of the 1729 Naples edition by Felix Musca for Josephi Ponzelli, 1729 (see nr. 33).With ownership s entry of Nicolai del Rosso (dated 1745) on title-page, who also added his annotations, esp. on pp. 1-120. 97, [1 blank], [1], [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of the standalone version of a systematic classification of European species of fish by the French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte (1803-1857). This publication - in Latin but with an Italian title - was also published as part of the proceedings of the 7th congress of Italian scientists held in Naples in 1845, at which Bonaparte presided over the zoological commission. "As early as 1831 Bonaparte became interested on the great principle of classification and was critical of Cuvier's concepts. In ichthyology Bonaparte made use of the location, the structure and the relationships of the branchiae in the classification of fishes. Bonaparte tried to establish our knowledge of various zoological groups once and for all, and published numerous synopses, conspectuses, and catalogs" (DSB).Binding worn with the head of the spine damaged and a large tear at the back repaired with tape. Some foxing throughout but otherwise in good condition.l Dean I, p. 149 1845.2; DSB II, pp. 281-283; Mulder Bosgoed, Bibliotheca ichthyologica et piscatoria, 591.

86 pp.Only known copy of a manual with rules and regulations for maintenance of the ships of the Royal Marine at Naples, the handling of the equipment, the composition, the punishments, how to salute with the canons, the division of booty, etc., published during an interesting time of Naples's turbulent history when the English and Franco-Spanish fleets dominated the Mediterranean.A preface by Antonius Count of Thurn and Valsassina (1723-1806), Commander of the navy of Naples and Sicily, precedes extracts of the rules and regulations issued by the Count of Thurn himself and Sir John Francis Edward Acton (1736-1811), Prime Minister of Naples under King Ferdinand IV of Naples (also King of Sicily and later of the Two Sicilies) and friend of the English, especially of the famous ambassador Hamiltion at Naples and his wife Emma. The preface is dated Naples, 15 April 1800, and is directed to the commanders of the Italian navy. The manual was compiled as a supplement to a manual titled Istruzioni dirette agl'inglesi . tradotte per sovrano comando, e corredate di annotazioni da Giannantonio de Torrebruna tenente colonnello al servizio di sua Maesta il Re delle Sicilie, published at Naples by the Stamperia Reale in 1798 (with an expanded edition in 1799). [8] pp.Only copy located of a ca. 1790 Naples chapbook edition in Italian verse of the popular story of Floris and Blancheflour, here Florindo and Chiarastella (in some editions Chiara Stella). The story is first known from a 12th-century French version, but appeared in many languages in the 13th- and 14th-centuries. It tells the story of an Islamitic King of Spain who sends away a Christian servant Chiarastella. His son Florindo, in love with the girl, rescues and marries her and the inherit the kingdom. The large woodcut shows two pastoral scenes in the foreground. On the left the King of Spain or his son Prince Florindo with two attendents, all on horse-back, meet a bearded man with a young boy, while to the left Florindo[?] and his dog find Chiarastella under a tree. In the background is a fortified building with gardens behind, presumably where Chiarastella was held prisoner, with two knights jousting before it and two men heading toward the door. The sun, moon and the stars appear at upper left. Naples was long Italy's leading centre of chapbook production. In the literature we fine only two similar editions, both extremely rare. Both are quartos of 4 leaves, printed in Naples, each with an illustration on the title-page. One was published by (Gennaro?) Riccio in 1791 and the other by Gaetano Eboli ca. 1805. Each has an illustration on the title-page, at least in the former printed from a woodblock (in the latter, the illustration is said to be a copperplate). In very good condition, with only some minor foxing, and nearly untrimmed, retaining deckles at the fore-edge.l Cf. WorldCat (2 similar Naples eds. pub. by Riccio 1791 (1 copy) & Eboli ca. 1800 (2 copies)); no similar ed. in ICCU.

[4], XXX, [2], 159, [1 blank], [3], [1 blank] pp.Third edition of a catalogue of erotic items from classical antiquity located in the secret cabinet of the King of Naples. It was first published in 1832 with only 41 plates. It includes frescoes, sculptures and vases from Classical Antiquity, some of them coming from Pompeii and Herculaneum. When King Francis I of Naples visited the Pompeii exhibition at the Naples National Archaeological Museum with his wife and daughter in 1819, he was embarrassed by the erotic artwork and ordered it to be "locked away" in a "secret cabinet"."Le cabinet du roi de Naples est la seule galerie au monde où l'on se soit proposé de réunir tous les chefs-d'oeuvre impudiques. Le livre qui les reproduit est l'indispensable complément de toutes les collections de musées, et doit trouver place dans un coin secret de la bibliothèque de l'artiste et de l'amateur" (Gay & Lemmonyer).Hinges weak (back hinge partly cracked), some foxing and staining throughout, a few plates and pages detached, otherwise in good condition.l Gay & Lemmonyer III, col. 682; Murray, Museums III, p. 46.

[24], 111, [9] pp. plus frontispiece and plates.Rare second edition of a classic, richly illustrated manual of heraldry, one of the principal publications of one of the most important heralds of his time, Claude-François Ménestrier (1631-1705). It explains the principles of heraldry and how they influenced the art of blazoning coats of arms, their origins and the meanings of their ornamentation and designs. To illustrate his theories, he includes many illustrations of coats of arms, showing the designs or serving as examples, particularly of the coats of arms of French noble families, which are also described in the text. It brings together all the fundamental information on the subject for everyone who wants an abridged, clear manual of heraldry and coats of arms. The present 1665 edition uses the plates for the first edition s engraved title-page (still dated 1661) and coats of arms, while several were replaced in later editions. Claude-François Ménestrier was a French herald and member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits).Lacking two plates (to face pp. 82 and 92, apparently those numbered III and V in the contents (though it confusingly gives the impression they should be II and IV), each with 42 coats of arms. Some marginal stains and browning in a few leaves, some of the colouring has offset from a few plates to the facing pages, but otherwise in very good condition. [8], 339, [5] pp.First Italian edition of an interesting and detailed account of the first overland journey from Spain to the East Indies (1671-80) made by the Spanish missionary Sebastian Pedro Cubero. Interestingly, Cubero covered most of his route by land, as Careri would later, allowing him to constantly observe the customs, religions, ceremonies and costumes of the peoples he visited, describing them in considerable detail. After spending time in Italy, where he was appointed as a missionary to Asia and the East Indies, Cubero travelled by way of Istanbul and Moscow to Iran, visiting Isfahan ("Hispaham") and Bandar Abbas, after which he finally arrived in India. After crossing to Malacca he was imprisoned by the Dutch and later banished from the city. He then proceeded to the Philippines and ultimately, by way of Mexico, returned to Europe. "After a stint as confessor in the imperial army in Hungary, Cubero became one of the notable travellers of the seventeenth century. What set him apart was the variety of his traveller s hats. Most obviously a missionary ., he also became . a representative figure of the whole exploratory enterprise. By circumnavigating the globe in his travels, he was recognized in his own time to be another Magellan, Drake, or Cavendish" (Noonan). Included are three very detailed chapters devoted to China, Tartary and the Chinese-Tartarian wars. Additionally, it gives an important discussion of Persia, India, Malacca, the Philippines and Mexico; chapter XX (pp. 136-156) contains an extensive discussion on Islam, the birth and death of Mohamed, and Mecca and Medina. Chapter XXXIII (pp. 225-229) contains a discussion of the Kingdom of Ormuz and Bandar Abbas, the city on the Straits of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.Bookplate of the New York "Explorers Club" (James B. Ford Library) on the paste-down. Old inscriptions on the front flyleaf; occasional stains. Lacks a flyleaf at the end; small tear in the corner of O4 with the loss of some text. Extremely rare series of 18 beautiful hand-coloured lithographs showing stage designs for the Real Teatro San Carlo, one of Italy's most famous opera houses. The striking plates include scenery for Zelmira (1822), the acclaimed opera by Rossini, who was the artistic director of the San Carlo from 1815 to 1822. Each lithograph has a hand-written caption and is dedicated to Maria Cristina Ferdinanda di Borbone, principessa delle Due Sicilie (1806-1878).Pasquale Canna was a distinguished, prolific, neo-classical stage designer who made a career as a painter and scenographer in Parma, Venice, Milan and Naples, working for such famous theatres as La Scala (Milan), the San Carlo and the Teatro del Fondo (Naples). The present brightly coloured plates are an impressive visual record of the eventful history of the San Carlo, published during the great age of Neapolitan opera. Some spotting, some insignificant waterstains, front inner hinge cracked, binding slightly chafed, otherwise in very good condition.l Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo records copies in Biblioteca Corsini and Biblioteca Bucardo; not in KVK; WorldCat.
