Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 175 pages. Published in 1997. The author's ninth novel. One of Martin Amis' finest achievements. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are several. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Presents Martin Amis' "Night Train". The author's full-fledged detective/thriller genre-novel, elements of which he put to good use in his earlier novels. The title is a tender homage to Oscar Peterson's eponymous jazz masterpiece. The novel marks the appearance of possibly Martin Amis' single most empathetic character, the Detective Mark Hoolihan, as almost ALL other Amis protagonists are either problematic anti-heroes, villains, or real-life incarnates, at best and at worst: Like porn film actors, they do in public what the rest of us do in private. As such, "Night Train" is singular in Amis' large and versatile body of work. He has noted that the serious modern novel is - or should ideally be - plotless, that only the thriller genre requires a plot. Otherwise, the serious novel is about thoughts, feelings, and sensations - a character's immanence, if that is not too high-sounding a word - as well as experience (the title of his memoir). Amis dubbed it the "voice novel", "voice" being his replacement-word for "character". He was right, of course, and his own voice, now permanently stilled with his premature demise (on May 19, 2023), is inimitable and irreplaceable. "Amis is a force unto himself. There is, quite simply, no one else like him" (The Washington Post). An absolute "must-have" title for Martin Amis collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Martin Amis. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are in multiple subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARTIN AMIS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0609601288. Signed by Author.
