With a folding engraved map, a tinted engraved frontispiece, 7 tinted engraved plates and 12 in-text wood engravings. Bound in contemporary half calf over purple cloth boards. Currie 1855" on the second free end-paper. Armorial bookplate of Perry (Percy?) Alport Molteno to the front paste-down. Henry Aaron Stern was a Jewish-born convert to Protestantism who became an Anglican missionary and captive in Abyssinia. He became a lifelong missionary for the London Society for Promoting Christianity Amongst the Jews (also known as the London Jewish Society, or London Jews' Society). With his wife, he proselytized in Palestine, Babylon, Constantinople, Baghdad, Persia, and to the Karaite Jews of the Crimea. In 1863, he became entangled in a diplomatic dispute in Ethiopia that led to his imprisonment. Five years later, he was rescued by a British military force, and was made a doctor of divinity in 1881. He wrote three memoirs, including the one here, which served as source material for Albert Augustus Isaacs' 1886 biography of Stern. Though hagiographic and written from a religious point of view, it includes informative accounts of missionary work among Jewish communities and gives insight into Victorian England's orientalism. Fumagalli 242. Hilmy II, p. 260.

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. First Edition. viii, 322 p. 22 cm. Fold-out map, 8 full-page tinted engravings, and 12 b&w in-text illustrations. Bound in half leather with marbled boards, endpapers and text block edges. Repairs to spine ends and corners. Bookplate on front pastedown. Foxing to first and last pages and three brown streaks on title page. Henry Aaron Stern (1820 - 1885) was a Jewish-born Anglican missionary who preached to Jews in Abyssinia. At first King Tewodros II of Ethiopia welcomed him, but, after various slights by Lord John Russell of the British Foreign Office and others, the king's attitude to the British changed. Stern was summoned to appear before the king in October 1863, after which Stern was beaten and imprisoned along with his assistant and two government representatives. Stern's situation was made more difficult by the fact that the king considered some the material in this book insulting, such as the statement that the king's mother was a kosso vendor. These circumstances led to the 1868 British Expedition to Abyssinia, one of the most expensive rescue missions in history.

Henry Aaron Stern was born a Jew in Germany, immigrated to London in 1839, converted to Protestantism at the Palestine Chapel in London and became a lifelong Anglican missionary for the London Society for Promoting Christianity Amongst the Jews (also known as the London Jewish Society, or London Jews' Society). After moving to London and converting to Christianity, Stern who was a German Jew, Born in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, became a missionary to the Jewish communities in Asia minor and later Jerusalem Constantinople and Baghdad by request of the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews. Stern traveled to Abyssinia where he had permission from King Theodore to Preach, but while there he got tangled in diplomatic disputes, which led to his imprisonment.
